How GrantAppli Uses OAuth

Understanding our secure access to your Google Drive

What is OAuth?

OAuth 2.0 is an industry-standard protocol for secure authorization. When you connect Google Drive to GrantAppli, OAuth allows us to access your files without ever seeing your Google password.

Think of it like giving someone a temporary key card: You give GrantAppli permission to access specific files, and you can revoke that permission at any time without changing your password.

Why Does GrantAppli Need Google Drive Access?

We request access to Google Drive to help you:

  • Browse your files: See your Google Drive documents without leaving GrantAppli
  • Import documents: Bring Google Docs and Sheets into your grant projects
  • Save time: No need to download files and re-upload them manually
  • Stay organized: Access all your grant materials from one central location

What Permissions Do We Request?

Requested Scopes:

📁 Google Drive (Read-Only)

drive.readonly

View and download files from your Google Drive. We cannot modify or delete your files.

📄 Google Docs (Read-Only)

documents.readonly

Read the content of your Google Docs to import them into GrantAppli.

📊 Google Sheets (Read-Only)

spreadsheets.readonly

Read data from your Google Sheets for budget tracking and data import.

✅ Important: Read-Only Access

All permissions are read-only. We can view and download files you choose to import, but we cannot modify, delete, or create files in your Google Drive.

What We Do With Your Data

✅ We DO:

  • Import files you explicitly select
  • Store imported content securely
  • Use AI to help you write better grants
  • Encrypt data in transit and at rest

❌ We DON'T:

  • Modify or delete your Google Drive files
  • Share your data with advertisers
  • Sell your information to third parties
  • Access files you don't explicitly import

How to Connect Google Drive

  1. 1

    Click the Google Drive button

Look for the blue button in your project's file manager

  2. 2

    Click "Connect with Google"

A new window will open asking you to sign in to Google

  3. 3

    Review and accept permissions

You'll see exactly what permissions we're requesting

  4. 4

    Browse and import files

Select files from your Google Drive to import into your project

How to Revoke Access

You're in control. You can disconnect GrantAppli from your Google Drive at any time:

  1. 1. Go to Google Account Permissions
  2. 2. Find "GrantAppli" in the list of connected apps
  3. 3. Click "Remove Access"
  4. 4. Confirm your choice

Note: Revoking access doesn't delete files you've already imported into GrantAppli. Those files remain in your projects until you manually delete them.

Security & Compliance

🔒 Security Measures

  • • HTTPS encryption for all data transfers
  • • Secure token storage in encrypted database
  • • Automatic token refresh for seamless access
  • • Regular security audits

✓ Compliance

  • • OAuth 2.0 industry standard
  • • Google API Services User Data Policy
  • • GDPR compliant data handling
  • • CCPA compliant for California users

Alternative: Public URL Import

Don't want to connect Google Drive? You can still import public Google Docs and Sheets by URL:

  • Set your document sharing to "Anyone with the link"
  • Copy the document URL
  • Paste it in the "Import from Web" modal (green globe button)
  • No OAuth required!

Note: This method only works for publicly shared documents and doesn't allow browsing multiple files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can GrantAppli access all my Google Drive files?

A: No. We can only access files you explicitly choose to import. We don't scan or index your entire Drive.

Q: What happens if I disconnect Google Drive?

A: Files already imported remain in your projects. You won't be able to browse or import new files until you reconnect.

Q: Does GrantAppli store my Google password?

A: No. OAuth means we never see or store your Google password. We only receive secure access tokens.

Q: Why does Google show an "unverified app" warning?

A: We're working on Google's verification process. The warning doesn't mean the app is unsafe - it's a standard notice for apps during development.

Q: Can I use GrantAppli without connecting Google Drive?

A: Absolutely! You can upload files directly, paste URLs, or create content from scratch. Google Drive is entirely optional.
